Overlooking a private beach in Waiiti, this full renovation transformed a derelict Scout’s hall into a spectacular five-bedroom bach.

The Jackson Architects’ design focuses on the home’s open-plan kitchen, dining and living area in what was once the main hall of the Scout complex. Lined with floor-length windows and level entry sliding doors to the deck outside, the space features original rimu flooring, lovingly restored in a three-step process to its former glory.

The columns and rafters supporting the roof of the original hall were clad in poplar, emphasizing the impressive height of the shiplapped ceiling above while subtly paying homage to the building’s unique history. With Venetian plaster walls, a handmade barn door and a brass ships porthole, the unique handcrafted elements used throughout this modern renovation give the space an inviting warmth and enduring sense of history.
