Bungalow Extension: Heritage Charm Meets Modern Family Living
This renovation project transformed a classic two-bedroom, one-bathroom New Plymouth bungalow into a spacious four-bedroom home complete with a new ensuite and an upgraded main bathroom, kitchen and hallway. Throughout the extension, original rimu floors and the plaster ceiling rose were lovingly retained, while new timber accents and feature lighting in the opened-up hallway showcase the repolished floors and complement bespoke timber door surrounds.
The galley kitchen was entirely reconfigured and relined with sleek monochrome joinery. A crisp white splashback contrasts dramatically with black benchtops and matching handles, while industrial-style pendant lights bridge the home’s heritage character and contemporary aesthetic. The result is a highly functional workspace that remains quietly elegant.
In the enlarged main bathroom, the addition of a skylight bathes the room in natural light. A free-standing bath and a spacious, fully tiled shower sit alongside a modern yet timeless vanity and premium tapware, creating a bathroom sanctuary that honours the era of the original home while meeting today’s standards of luxury and comfort.
A new master suite with its own ensuite rounds out the interior transformation, offering privacy and convenience. Outside, custom decking winds around existing plantings, with new stairs and box gardens completing the refined exterior. The finished extension is a seamless blend of old and new, designed for family living and built to stand the test of time and weather the New Plymouth environment.
